Photo Essay

I choose this photo as my first one because I took it on the first day. After my first day of internship, I was going to my mom's car when I noticed the sun. My internship is right on the beach, so it was a beautiful scene. So I got the camera and took of the picture.

This picture is of my internship sight. It's the front office of the main building. This picture is special because it my internship felt like home. Every day I walked by this sign and it always stuck out to me. I felt it necessary to eventually take a picture. When you first show up at the internship site, there isn’t really much evidence pointing out that you’re at WiLDCOAST. Mainly because of the fact that the company is located within an apartment complex. However this one signs makes all the difference because it’s the only clear representation of where you are at.

One of the main projects I did during internship was a creating an ad for a Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day Cleanup event we were having on January 22nd, 2011. I created a Photoshop ad and a final cut express movie. After I created these ads, I went to the event that was held on Saturday. My friend and I interviewed a few people and got some really good pictures. Of all the pictures, this was one of my favorites. It focuses on the flower in the front, and it blurs out the background.

5. What advice would you pass on to future interns? What are the most important skills for a student to be successful at his/her internship? How could another student develop these skills prior to beginning internship?

Advice I would give to future Juniors is to take criticism well. There is always going to be a difference of opinion between people, but what is key is how you adapt to change. You can't always have things your way, but you can combine two different ideas to make a idea that appeals to everyone. These skills will be lead to success because you can create great opportunities for ideas you may not have even thought of. The best way to prepare for this is start now. Just have teachers or peers look at your work before hand, and then take in their ideas if they seem beneficial.

3. You are half-way through your project. How is it going? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned? What are you doing to ensure a successful completion of your internship project.

I've finished a few key tasks during my projects. I don't have one specific project because I'm working on a few videos. I recently just finished a promo video to try and get people to come out to the event we're having Saturday, January 22nd. The video is posted on the website and I'm going to be making another film at the event to create a whole new video about the events and interviews there. Some challenges I've faced are trying to get these projects done because I've had little time to get the video up in time. What I've learned is how to use Final Cut Express a lot better then I already did. What I'm doing to create a successful project is including my mentor's and a few employee's opinion for my video. Like what like/dislike, what could be changed, etc.

Promo Video.

6. What are you thankful for in your internship experience?

What I'm especially thankful for during this internship is such a wonderful experience I'm having. I'm learning so much about not only what WiLDCOAST does and how they impact the environment around them, but the work life. I'm growing up really quickly, and being able to take a few weeks out of school and experience the real world is a wonderful opportunity. Everyone here is extremely nice and welcoming. I felt like I was at home after being here for two days. I feel like I've helped my mentor out a lot ranging from little task like around the office, to creating posters and videos for her event. I couldn't have asked for a better internship and I think internships should be required for all high schoolers.

4. How has or do you see your internship changing the way you consider that paths your future will take?

I've learned a lot while here at my internship about our environment. When I first came here, I didn't see myself wanting to do this type of work when I got older. However after my first few weeks, my perspective has altered. WiLDCOAST does a lot of interesting work not only in the U.S., but also in other parts of the world. It benefits that I want to study in science/biology, which would benefit me at company like WiLDCOAST. Another thing is that they're such a friendly environment and everyone gets along great. I would love to work at a company like this.

#2. What is the biggest challenge face at your internship?

One major problem I face at the moment is trying to find a way to complete all of my projects I have due in a timely fashion and to the best of my ability. I recently finished a Photoshop ad for a MLK Service Day Cleanup event we're having. Now I'm currently working on one video promoting people to attend the event, and I'm trying to give as much time and dedication I can to it, but I have to constantly think about other projects I'm going to do and the steps that are needed to prepare for them. On top of that I have to do semi-important tasks on the side, but it doesn't bother me much because I'm glad to help out in any way I can. By the end of my internship session I know I won't be able to complete everything, but I hope I can help out by completing major projects that I know I can handle with my abilities. Not only for my mentor, but it would also benefit me because I know I helped somebody else with their work rather then just sit at home doing nothing.

#3. Describe the project you'll do at internship, including the skills and technology you need to do it and what you hope your project looks like as a final product.

I will be working on a few projects throughout my few weeks of internship. The first project I will be working on is a photoshop add for an upcoming event. My mentor is having me make an add for the Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day Cleanup they are having. I will be making a video at the event with interviews, and footage of wildlife at the Otay Regional Park where it is located. My skills/experience with photoshop and technology will be beneficial to this project. I hope by the end of this project, I can complete a successful and informative video that will attract local San Diego residents to visit the park.
